By Traci Weisenbach, Laker PR coordinator
I must admit, I have one of the coolest jobs ever. I get to brag for a living.
I know, it’s not proper to boast. It’s best to be humble. However, when your job is to promote a school district and spread the word about the amazing things that go on within the school buildings every day, that does involve being at least a little braggadocious – it requires a hint of swagger. When you work for a district as all-around marvelous as Lakers, it is difficult not to be like Kanye West (the king of horn tooters).
Since January 2013, I’ve been serving as the public relations coordinator for Lakers. Put simply, I am the official news reporter for the district. I work to let parents and community members know what is going on at Lakers, because it’s important for people to know about what’s happening at their school district. It’s the place where our treasured future generations are prepared for what life will bring – although in this age when technology is advancing so quickly, schools are preparing students for a life we can only begin to fathom. It’s a huge undertaking, and I can tell you from daily experience – Laker administrators, teachers and support staff are productively meeting that challenge every day with inspiring dedication, innovation and passion. I see it for myself.
Then I get to boast about it – as humbly as I can.
I mainly use the district’s website (www.lakerschools.org) and the district’s Facebook page (EPBP Lakers), along with other online media venues (Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube). I also send pictures and articles to local media. I create flyers and various advertisements and produce videos to promote programs/events. I put together an e-newsletter, “The Laker Anchor,” that comes out each quarter. I’m always trying to figure out unique ways to spread the message of how great Lakers is. There are so many awesome things that happen here, believe me, it’s difficult to keep up. It is a very rewarding position, though, and I consider myself fortunate to have it.
I’m also proud to say I am a Laker graduate.
Oh boy, there I go being Kanye again. Yo, I just can’t help myself.
By the way, one of the coolest things about my position is I get to have lunch with the person who inspired me to be a writer – Faith (McIntyre) Deming. She works part-time at Laker Elementary in the Student Responsibility Center. She was an elementary teacher for many years and she was my second grade teacher at Bay Port Elementary (Go Clippers!). It’s a privilege to share a meal a few times a week with such an influential person in my life. Thank you, “Miss McIntyre,” for being such a wonderful role model.
I know each and every one of our Laker teachers is continuing to inspire students every day. They (the teachers and students alike) might not realize it now, but believe me, it is happening.
That’s something we can all brag about at Lakers.
